Keep Active this Summer

June 15, 2023

summer activities

Don’t let the heat stop you from staying active this summer! Take advantage of the warm and sunny days to get outside and reap the health benefits of exercise or take advantage of indoor facilities and activities when the temperatures soar too high. Here are some great tips for keeping active while beating the summer heat:

Go for an early morning walk

Start your summer days off right with an early morning walk when the temperature is coolest. This is also great for cutting down on the risk of dehydration, but always bring extra water with you just in case.

Take an exercise class

This can benefit your physical and mental health. Sign up with a friend for your favorite group exercise or branch out to new activities and meet new friends. Many YMCA locations offer classes specifically for seniors with specially trained instructors.

Take a scenic walk in your community

If long walks around a track aren’t getting you excited for exercise, try a scenic walk around your area’s zoo, park, or aquarium. For extra-hot days, indoor spots like art museums are great for air-conditioned exercise – especially if you take the stairs!

Gardening

Whether you enjoy having a steady supply of fresh summer vegetables or landscaping your yard with your favorite flowers. Gardening is an excellent way to stay active and enjoy the fresh summer air. Try joining a gardening club to connect with others who share your interest. If you’re feeling extra ambitious, try cleaning up a local public garden.

Volunteering

Staying active doesn’t have to be a full workout. If you’re looking to get out of your house, volunteering in your community can be a great option! You can ask your local library if they need help re-shelving books or help oversee a local school’s summer programs.

Remember to always take precautions when pursuing outdoor activities away from your house, especially during the warmer and busier months. Always pack extra water and take breaks regularly. Wear insect repellant, especially near dusk and at night. Protect your eyes and skin from the bright summer sun with eye protection, sunscreen, and light-colored clothes. Staying active in the summer may require some creativity, but your overall well-being will be better for it by adding some new adventures to your summer!
